FAAN may extend cab upgrade deadline to Oct 2026, raise tariff to N1,500
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced on June 22, 2026 that it is considering a final extension of the deadline for airport cab operators to upgrade their vehicles to October 2026. Operators have already received multiple extensions: the original deadline was January 2026, later moved to June 2026 after stakeholders cited economic challenges. Discussions on the upgrade policy began in July 2024. FAAN says enough time has been given and no further extensions beyond October 2026 will be granted.
Alongside the vehicle upgrade, FAAN confirmed an increase in the operational tariff for airport cabs from ₦500 to ₦1,500, citing inflation, rising maintenance costs, and the need to sustain airport infrastructure and service quality. The policy aims to improve reliability, comfort, safety, and overall passenger satisfaction, as airport transport is often the first and last experience for travelers.
FAAN emphasized that it deals directly with registered cab companies operating on airport premises, not through associations or unions, and that the changes are part of broader reforms to align Nigerian airports with global standards.
What should operators and passengers know? Operators should use the extension period to meet the required vehicle standards by October 2026. Passengers should anticipate higher fares but can expect improved service quality and safety at airports nationwide. Stakeholders should engage through registered cab companies for updates and monitor FAAN announcements for the final decision.
