Fani-Kayode Calls for End to Nigerians' Killings in South Africa
Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa Femi Fani-Kayode has urged the South African government to halt xenophobic attacks after three Nigerians were killed in Johannesburg on September 18, 20, and 21. He said the killings bring the total number of Nigerians murdered in South Africa this year to 12, and 112 since 2022, with 32 of those deaths caused by members of the South African security forces. Fani-Kayode noted that no perpetrator has been brought to justice or convicted for any of these crimes.
The attacks heighten safety concerns for Nigerians living, working, or traveling in South Africa, particularly in Johannesburg where the incidents occurred. The pattern of violence, including alleged involvement of security personnel, undermines trust in law enforcement and may affect diaspora communities, remittance flows, and bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
Fani-Kayode called on South African authorities to investigate the killings, prosecute those responsible, and ensure protection for Nigerian nationals. Nigerians in South Africa are advised to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk areas, and report any threats or incidents immediately to the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg or via emergency hotlines.
