FCMB launches ₦20bn Healthcare Fund to finance Nigerian hospitals, clinics and pharma businesses
First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has committed ₦20 billion to finance private healthcare businesses across Nigeria, targeting hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies and maternity homes. The Healthcare Fund, announced at FCMB's inaugural healthcare summit in Lagos on August 6, 2026, will support expansion, medical equipment purchases, infrastructure development, working capital and technology investments.
The initiative addresses a critical funding gap as Nigeria aims to achieve 70% local production of medicines and medical devices by 2030 under its Presidential Healthcare Value Chain Initiative. FCMB Managing Director Yemisi Edun emphasized the need for "patient, affordable and long-term capital" to build a strong healthcare system, noting the fund combines lending with advisory support and partnerships to help businesses strengthen operations.
Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) president Njide Ndili highlighted that access to finance remains a major constraint for private healthcare operators, citing HFN's partnership with the PharmAccess Medical Credit Fund which showed strong repayment performance when financing includes technical support and quality standards. HFN will collaborate with FCMB to develop a pre-qualification framework for healthcare facilities, leveraging its network of 400+ member organisations and 4,000 professionals.
Government figures shared at the summit showed over ₦339 billion disbursed through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund in the past 12 years, including ₦235 billion in the last three years, with a recent ₦32.9 billion allocation supporting 8,300 primary healthcare centres and plans to expand to 13,000 facilities nationwide.
Will healthcare business owners explore this ₦20bn fund for expansion or equipment upgrades, and what steps should they take now to become investment-ready through HFN's pre-qualification process?
