Fernandez names Okocha, Yobo, Troost-Ekong as his football role models

Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, 25, said former Super Eagles captains Austin "Jay-Jay" Okocha, Joseph Yobo, and William Troost-Ekong are his three Nigerian football role models. He spoke ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea‑Bissau, telling Football Fans Tribe that he looks up to Troost‑Ekong, Yobo, and, of course, Jay‑Jay Okocha. Fernandez praised Okocha’s style, saying, "I think the style, elegance, and things that he [Okocha] does with the ball—I think everyone growing up wants to play like that. Obviously, things change, and you end up not playing like that." The defenders' choice highlights how Nigeria’s football legends continue to inspire the current generation, linking past greats like Okocha and Yobo with present‑day leaders such as Troost‑Ekong. For young players and fans, seeing current professionals honor these icons reinforces the value of mentorship and the lasting impact of skill, leadership, and professionalism on the pitch. Who are your football role models, and how have they influenced your appreciation for the game?
