Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo disclosed on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu has approved a discount on certain outstanding fees owed to the Federal Government by airline operators. The announcement followed hours of meetings with the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, airline operators, oil marketers, and other stakeholders convened to address the unsustainable rise in Jet A1 fuel prices threatening service disruptions.

Keyamo also said the President will soon constitute a special committee to review and reduce the multiple taxes and levies currently embedded in airfares. The measures aim to provide immediate relief to the aviation sector, ease the financial burden on both airlines and passengers, and improve overall industry sustainability amid growing tension over fuel costs.

While the exact fees covered by the discount and the committee’s timeline were not specified, the interventions signal federal acknowledgment of the cost pressures facing airlines. Passengers may see more stable fares if the tax reductions materialize, and operators could gain relief that helps prevent flight suspensions or fare hikes. Stakeholders should watch for implementation details in the coming days, though no immediate action is required from the traveling public.
