The Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources convened an emergency stakeholders' meeting this week (Monday, June 20) with the DSS, EFCC, Nigeria Police Force, NMDPRA, producers, marketers and terminal operators to address Liquefied Petroleum Gas hoarding and diversion to neighbouring countries. The meeting followed recent LPG price spikes pushing cooking gas to ₦1,500 per kilogram, straining household budgets and increasing essential goods costs nationwide.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo stated President Bola Tinubu is concerned about the price impact and has directed agencies to take proactive steps. NMDPRA CEO Mallam Rabiu Umar identified high landing costs, domestic supply constraints, logistics challenges and global disruptions as key price drivers, but noted ongoing measures should ease pressures in coming weeks.

National LPG supply sufficiency improved from 11 days to 22 days between May and June 2026, while average daily supply rose 18% from 4,262 to 5,040 metric tonnes. Stakeholders pledged support for intensified market monitoring, anti-hoarding enforcement, storage/distribution infrastructure expansion, increased domestic production, better product tracking and improved market data access. Success will be measured by increased availability, better distribution efficiency and reduced price pressures nationwide.

Will these agreed measures actually translate to lower cooking gas prices for your household in the coming weeks, or will landing costs and supply chain issues keep squeezing your budget?
