The Federal Government is establishing a Cybersecurity Coordination Council to strengthen Nigeria’s collective defence against escalating cyber threats. Communications Minister Bosun Tijani revealed the plan in a statement on Wednesday, describing the council as a non-statutory, multi-stakeholder platform uniting government agencies, private sector operators, industry associations, and civil society.

The initiative responds to recent high-profile cyber incidents that disrupted major institutions and exposed vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. The minister stressed that modern threats require "collective defence models" and trusted intelligence sharing across sectors. The council will advise on strategies, develop sector-wide protocols, coordinate incident response, and support workforce capacity building.

A technical secretariat—hosted by NITDA with support from NCC, Galaxy Backbone, and NDPC—will draft the council’s terms of reference. A national industry roundtable is scheduled for April 2026 to launch stakeholder consultations. The secretariat operates under the minister’s office to ensure alignment with national priorities.

For everyday Nigerians, this initiative could lead to safer digital experiences as online banking, government services, and business operations become more resilient to attacks. With cybercriminals targeting everything from bank accounts to identity data, how confident are you in current protections? Beyond relying on government efforts, what personal cybersecurity practices do you maintain—like strong passwords, two-factor authentication, or cautious clicking on links?
