The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate International Workers’ Day. The announcement was made by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (Dr.) in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerian workers across the country, praising their hard work and dedication to national development.

This nationwide holiday means that government offices, schools, and many businesses will be closed on May 1, giving workers a day off to rest or observe the occasion. Essential services such as hospitals, power, and security agencies are expected to remain operational, but the public should anticipate reduced administrative and commercial activity.

Workers and employers should plan accordingly: confirm leave policies with employers, consider travel or leisure plans, and note that banks and many private firms may observe the holiday. The declaration underscores the government’s recognition of labor’s role in Nigeria’s growth and provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on workers’ contributions.
