FG declares Thursday, October 1, 2026 a nationwide public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement released Wednesday and signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

The holiday gives workers, students and most businesses a day off, allowing Nigerians to attend official ceremonies, community events, family gatherings or simply reflect on the nation’s journey since 1960. Banks, schools and government offices will close, while essential services such as hospitals and power supply remain operational. Expect increased travel and market activity as people prepare for celebrations.

Mark your calendar for October 1 and plan accordingly—whether you intend to join the parade in Abuja, enjoy a local festival, or use the break for rest. Essential services stay open, but most private firms follow the federal directive, so check with your employer or school for exact closure times.

How will you spend the Independence Day holiday—attending official events, volunteering in your community, relaxing with family, or using the day for personal projects?
