FG declares Tuesday, 25 August public holiday for Eid ul Mawlid
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 25 August 2026 a nationwide public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday in a statement signed by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani. He congratulated Muslims worldwide and urged Nigerians to reflect on the Prophet’s values of compassion, humility and service, while also calling for prayers for peace in the country.
The declaration follows the Islamic lunar calendar, with Eid ul Mawlid observed on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal.
The holiday means that government offices, banks, schools and many private businesses will be closed on Tuesday. Nigerians are advised to plan any essential transactions or appointments for Monday or Wednesday, and to expect possible disruptions to transport and services on the holiday itself.
With the day off, will you spend it in quiet reflection, join community celebrations, or use the time to volunteer and extend the Prophet’s message of service to others?
