FG launches Bridge Open Access to execute $2bn 90,000km nationwide fibre network
The Federal Government has incorporated Bridge Open Access (Bridge OA) as the independent company to deliver Project BRIDGE's planned 90,000-kilometre nationwide fibre-optic network, moving the $2 billion Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth project into execution. Announced by Communications Minister Bosun Tijani on Saturday, this creates the institutional platform for private investor onboarding and physical deployment.
Currently, Nigeria has 101,148.36 km of fibre-optic cable, but 18,559.83 km (18.35%) is concentrated in Lagos and FCT. Project BRIDGE will add 90,000 km of open-access fibre infrastructure, extending high-speed connectivity beyond major commercial centers to underserved communities nationwide. The project aims to connect over 200,000 educational, healthcare and social institutions.
Financing includes $500m from World Bank, $100m from EBRD, €22m EU grant, and $200m from AfDB. Under the PPP structure, FG will hold 25-49% stake while private investors hold at least 51%. Development began in 2024, with deployment expected to start now that the SPV is incorporated.
