FG meters 60% of Nigeria's electricity customers under World Bank program

FG reports metering 60% of Nigeria's active electricity customers—668,000 out of 1,033,000 meters deployed—under Phase 1 of the $500 million World Bank-funded DISREP program. The initiative, driven by Presidential Metering Initiative and BPE coordination, aims to eliminate arbitrary estimated billing for registered customers nationwide, ensuring users pay only for actual consumption.

This update came from the NCP meeting chaired by VP Kashim Shettima on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Presidential Villa. BPE DG Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi confirmed the deployment figures, noting ongoing efforts to close the metering gap that has long plagued Nigeria's power sector. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe emphasized collaborative work to ensure Nigerians derive tangible value from electricity and other critical sectors.

Additionally, 17 states have established their own electricity regulatory commissions since April 2024, with Akwa Ibom doing so in July 2026, though DG Gbeleyi noted some fine-tuning remains needed in implementing the Electricity Act. The metering progress represents a significant step toward ending the widespread practice of estimated billing that has frustrated consumers for years.
