FG mourns Nigerian medic killed in Russian strike on Kharkiv
Nigerian medical graduate Nnani Adaobi Marian, 23, died in Germany after sustaining burns covering about 90% of her body in a Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, Ukraine, on June 29 2026. The Kharkiv National Medical University alumna was transferred to a German hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries.
In a statement issued on Tuesday July 6 2026, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the government received the news with ‘profound sadness’ and extended condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and the Nigerian community. The ministry said it is in contact with Ukrainian and German authorities and Nigeria’s missions in those countries to verify the incident and provide consular assistance.
It reiterated its deep concern over civilian casualties in the conflict and urged all parties to cease hostilities and pursue dialogue under international law and the UN Charter. For Nigerians abroad, the incident highlights risks faced by students in conflict zones and underscores the need for timely travel advisories and consular support; families seeking assistance can contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directly.
