The Federal Government has unveiled eligibility criteria for the ₦50,000 National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) grant. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, confirmed payments have commenced — this is a grant, not a loan, and beneficiaries owe no repayment.

Selection isn't random. Two federal databases determine who qualifies: a valid National Identification Number (NIN) from NIMC, and inclusion in the National Social Register (NSR), which covers over 70 million poor and vulnerable Nigerians coordinated by NASSCO. States identify their poorest communities, enumerators work with local leaders to register households digitally, and those ranked in the bottom six poverty deciles may enter the National Beneficiary Register used for cash transfers.

Being on the register doesn't guarantee payment — further screening applies. Disbursement happens in phases across all six geopolitical zones. "Not everyone will be in the first batch," the ministry said. "Exclusion now isn't permanent exclusion."

Critical warning: the programme is completely free. No official or agent is authorised to collect money to add names. Anyone demanding payment is a scammer.

If you have a valid NIN and believe your household qualifies, ensure your community leaders engage with state enumerators when they arrive. The NSR captures vulnerability through a structured process — not political patronage. Will your community be organised enough to get counted when enumerators visit?
