FG proposes sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, including the introduction of three separate orientation camp phases instead of a single programme, the creation of 11 specialised career streams for prospective corps members to choose from during registration, and an expansion of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) scheme. The plans also call for replacing the traditional khaki uniform with locally produced attire and appointing a civilian director-general to lead the NYSC, breaking the long-standing practice of posting a military officer to the post.
These changes affect thousands of graduates who undertake the mandatory one-year service each year. By splitting orientation into phases, the scheme aims to reduce overcrowding and allow more tailored training. The 11 career streams ranging from agro-allied to ICT are intended to align corps members' placements with market-relevant skills, while the revamped SAED programme seeks to deepen entrepreneurship training. Using locally made uniforms supports the textile industry and could cut uniform-procurement costs. A civilian director-general may bring a different administrative approach to the corps.
