The Federal Government has announced that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with locally made Adire fabric, a move announced by Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief earlier this week. The change follows a Federal Executive Council approval on June 29 that overhauled the NYSC scheme, extending the orientation camp from three weeks to six weeks, replacing the Passing Out Parade with a graduation ceremony, and introducing a technology‑driven call‑up process. Corps members will now be posted according to their academic qualifications and professional skills, with security‑sensitive deployments favouring those familiar with the area. The military’s role shifts from mobilisation to providing security support, while the Attorney‑General and the Ministry of Youth Development have been directed to amend the NYSC Act to give the reforms legal backing. The reforms, born from a committee set up in September 2025, aim to boost Nigeria’s textile industry, improve graduate employability, and address security concerns. With an estimated 180,000 graduates mobilised each year, the shift to Adire could channel significant government spending into local Ogun and Kwara textile producers. Will the new uniform and skill‑based postings make NYSC more relevant to your career goals, or do you see drawbacks in the extended camp and changed deployment?
