FG to deploy 90,000km fiber network, 3,700 telecom towers & launch postcode system Oct 1
The Federal Government announced rollout of three major digital infrastructure projects starting within weeks: deployment of 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic network nationwide, rollout of 3,700 telecommunications towers to connect over 20 million rural Nigerians without telecom access, and launch of an alphanumeric postcode system on October 1. This was disclosed by Minister of Communications Bosun Tijani after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, with resource mobilisation and contracts already completed.
These projects aim to transform broadband connectivity across all states, LGAs and wards while establishing a modern digital addressing system capable of identifying every property in Nigeria. They form part of the N12 billion digital economy investment plan and build on the Federal Executive Council's March 2026 approval of the GIS-enabled postcode system. The initiative targets significant improvement in broadband penetration and rural telecom access as part of Nigeria's digital transformation strategy.
With deployment beginning soon and the postcode system launching October 1, Nigerians can expect improved internet access in underserved areas and should prepare for the new addressing system that will affect deliveries, emergency services and public service delivery. The projects complement earlier government plans to have digital infrastructure fully operational by 2027 through continued investments in fibre, satellites and rural towers.
