FG to install CCTV, solar lights on Mararaba-Keffi Road as national highway security model
The Federal Government announced plans to install CCTV cameras and solar-powered lighting along the Mararaba-Keffi Road to enhance highway security and real-time monitoring, effective immediately. Minister of Works David Umahi revealed this Saturday during an inspection, stating the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to integrate technology into road infrastructure and will serve as a pilot for nationwide highway security programmes.
The initiative includes surveillance infrastructure and observation facilities enabling security agencies to monitor road activities remotely, with plans to revive the Highway Patrol and Safety Unit in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force. Umahi explained that CCTV and rapid-response mechanisms will reduce incident response times and combat insecurity on this key Abuja-Nasarawa corridor.
JRB Construction Limited is handling 40 kilometres of the road, having completed 21 kilometres of binder course within eight months despite funding challenges. Umahi praised the company as one of Nigeria’s most reliable indigenous contractors, noting it mobilised equipment before payment to prevent delays. He warned that contractor performance reviews will soon begin for all federal road projects, with consequences for those failing to demonstrate commitment.
Umahi also ordered immediate repairs to damaged pavement sections to ease traffic congestion pending full reconstruction, and insisted milled asphalt materials be recycled and reused in construction. Ministry officials face accountability for implementing approved directives, with Umahi stressing that 'every official must play his or her role' in nation-building.
Will you notice improved security presence and faster incident response on your Mararaba-Keffi commute, or should you anticipate temporary delays during pavement repairs and CCTV installation phases?
