FG warns fuel subsidy return would trigger capital flight, pressure naira ahead of elections
At the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Nigeria's economic team warned that returning to fuel subsidy would trigger capital flight, put pressure on the naira, and undermine economic reform gains. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, and Budget Minister Atiku Bagudu spoke at the media briefing, with Oyedele clarifying on October 8 that the current 30-day fuel price reduction is not a subsidy return.
The ministers emphasized that investors need assurances the government won't reverse fuel subsidy removal or exchange rate unification, particularly as Nigeria approaches another election cycle. Oyedele stated that any signal of possible subsidy return could prompt investors to withdraw capital, increasing pressure on the foreign exchange market and the naira.
The delegation also announced Nigeria's seven percent economic growth target and called for IMF and World Bank reforms to give developing economies stronger voice in global financial decisions. They stressed the need for fiscal and monetary authorities to work together to sustain reform gains, highlighting debt, climate, AI, and inequality as key topics from the meetings.
With fuel prices remaining market-driven and the naira's stability tied to investor confidence in these reforms, will you adjust your financial planning for potential continued economic stability or prepare for possible volatility if policy direction changes?
