FGN bond allotments totalled N7.15 trillion between January and September 2026, a 106% increase from the N3.48 trillion allotted in the same period of 2025. Monthly allotments surged in January (N1.54tn, +157%), June (N1.22tn, +1,120% vs June 2025), July (N931.82bn, +401%) and August (N805.16bn, +491%), while February and April saw drops of 42.4% and 30.4% respectively. Demand remained strong, with total subscriptions reaching N13.72 trillion over the nine months, exceeding allotments and indicating robust investor appetite.

As of June 30 2026, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at N166.79 trillion, of which N91.59 trillion (54.9%) was domestic debt. FGN bonds made up N64.84 trillion, or 74.5% of the domestic debt portfolio, alongside FGN Sukuk, savings bonds, green bonds and promissory notes. The data shows the government continues to rely heavily on FGN bonds to finance its borrowing needs.

For investors, the trend suggests watching bond yields and auction results for pricing signals. For citizens and businesses, rising government borrowing may influence interest rates, private credit availability and fiscal sustainability, warranting attention to future debt service costs and potential tax implications.
