Government securities dominated the Nigerian Exchange in the first nine months of 2026, making up ₦11.08 trillion or 80% of the ₦13.86 trillion in identifiable listings, per the NGX RegCo X-Compliance Report published last weekend. Federal Government instruments alone accounted for ₦10.535 trillion, with additional contributions from the FGN Roads Sukuk (₦300 billion) and Lagos State bonds (₦244.815 billion).

This leaves only ₦2.78 trillion for corporate and other non-government transactions, highlighting how sovereign borrowing is consuming most of the capital market's capacity. The concentration reflects the government's elevated financing needs - Nigeria's 2026 budget deficit was revised from ₦23.85 trillion to ₦31.46 trillion, with domestic borrowing expected to cover most of the gap.

Specific instruments driving this trend include multiple reopenings of the FGN June 2038 bond (appearing in listings worth ₦710.01 billion, ₦1.373 trillion and ₦354.63 billion), as well as the January 2035 and April 2037 bonds. The NGX RegCo data covers both new listings and additions to existing bond lines.

For investors, this reinforces government bonds as the dominant safe-haven asset in Nigeria's fixed-income market. For businesses, it signals continued competition for limited pool of long-term capital, potentially keeping corporate borrowing costs elevated. How might this capital allocation affect your investment strategy or business financing plans in the current high-deficit environment?
