FG to Connect All Schools Nationwide to Internet
Federal Government announces nationwide school internet connectivity initiative. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed plans to deploy 90,000km of fiber optic broadband and 3,700 telecommunications towers, prioritizing rural and underserved communities. The initiative follows President Tinubu's directive to expand digital infrastructure across education, aiming to strengthen digital learning and integrate AI technologies. Key components include developing a coordinated framework for connectivity from foundational schools to universities, building on NgREN's previous World Bank-funded broadband access for universities. Implementation involves two technical working groups and expanded NgREN governance. First phase results expected within three months, enabling access to digital platforms and global knowledge resources. The move supports examination reforms including gradual Computer-Based Testing transition and complements existing EdTech initiatives like eLearn and Inspire Live(s) interactive lessons.
