Figo says Ballon d’Or voters decide winner, backs Real Madrid in LaLiga title race

Former Portugal international Luis Figo told Radio MARCA that the people who vote for the Ballon d’Or have the power to decide the winner of the award. Speaking on September 22, 2026, Figo also said Real Madrid will fight Barcelona for the LaLiga title until the very end of the season. He added that he does not vote himself, so he avoids the dilemma of having to choose.

Figo’s comment highlights that the Ballon d’Or outcome rests with the international journalists who cast votes, not solely with on‑field performance. For Nigerian football fans who follow the award—especially when African stars like Victor Osimhen or Ademola Lookman are contenders—understanding the voting process clarifies why results sometimes surprise observers and why debates about bias arise each year.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or will be decided by this same group of voters. While fans cannot influence the vote directly, knowing who decides helps interpret the outcome and assess whether continental representation is adequate. As the award approaches, will you pay closer attention to how journalists rate African players, or do you think the voting body should include more voices from the continent?
