On Tuesday, Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele addressed the Africa’s Golden Future Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, on the sidelines of the World Bank/IMF meetings. He said Nigeria’s recent economic reforms—fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation and tax reform—offer lessons for African countries and the world: start with the end in mind, use scenario planning, communicate with clarity to build trust, and present the counterfactual reality so people see what life would be without the reforms.

Oyedele stressed that sequencing matters: first correct prices to reduce volatility, then stabilise the system, and finally scale. Sustainability comes from embedding reforms into law and institutions, and from policy consistency—capital follows trust before returns. He also noted Africa’s peculiarities, saying many citizens live in poverty and have limited education, so when they are hungry and angry they cannot be rational; therefore robust support systems such as cash transfers for over 10 million households and education funds are essential to keep people able to survive while reforms take hold.

The minister praised the political leadership’s tenacity for maintaining policy consistency and added that if Nigeria can achieve these reforms, other nations can too. For citizens navigating higher energy prices and cost‑of‑living pressures, understanding the long‑term gains behind short‑term pain is key. What support measures would help you adjust to these reforms, and how can you hold leaders accountable for the promised palliatives?
