Finnish prosecutor seeks longer sentence for Simon Ekpa as both appeal terrorism conviction
Pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa has appealed his terrorism conviction and six-year prison sentence in Finland, while the Finnish prosecutor also appeals seeking a longer term. The Court of Appeal will hear both appeals within the next three weeks. Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 and sentenced in September 2025 after the Päijät-Häme District Court found him guilty of using his social media following to fuel tensions in Nigeria’s South-East between August 2021 and November 2024. He has described himself as a disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and was designated a “terrorism financier” by the Nigerian government in March 2025. The appeals come as Finland’s legal system re-examines whether the original six-year sentence adequately addressed his role in inciting violence and supporting separatist activities in the region.
