The call was made at the union’s congress held at the IBB Pen House in Minna, where journalists reviewed developments affecting the state and the media profession. He also announced plans for a media summit and a statewide media tour to enable journalists assess ongoing government projects. Responding, NUJ State Chairman, Dr Abu Nmodu, assured the government of the union’s support while stressing the need to uphold professional standards. “Our support is anchored on professionalism, objectivity, and press freedom,” he said. The congress approved the creation of new chapels, including Nester FM and a federated structure for radio and online practitioners, and ratified the inauguration of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) executive council. On governance issues, the union raised concerns over insecurity in Niger North, Zone C, urging quick action from both federal and state governments. “Government must take urgent steps to curb insecurity, especially in affected areas,” the Congress stated. Participants also decried epileptic power supply in Minna and other parts of the state, calling for immediate intervention. The union further criticised the neglect of state-owned media organisations, including NSTV, Radio Niger, and Newsline Newspaper, and called for their revitalisation. It also highlighted the shortage of primary school teachers across the 25 local government areas and urged the recruitment of more qualified personnel. The NUJ advised politicians to embrace issue-based campaigns and effectively utilise the media to communicate their programmes to voters. The congress also expressed concern over altercations between journalists and security personnel, assuring members that the matter is being addressed. The union then reaffirmed its commitment to ethical journalism and the development of Niger State.
