Flamingos face Mexico in U-17 World Cup last 16 as four African teams advance
Nigeria's Flamingos recovered from an opening 2-1 loss to Poland to finish second in Group B with six points — the highest tally among Africa's five representatives at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco. Wins over Puerto Rico (2-0) and DPR Korea (3-1) secured their knockout stage berth and a Round of 16 clash with Mexico on Thursday, 29 October.
Ghana's Black Maidens also advanced automatically after finishing second in Group C with four points, setting up a meeting with Argentina. Hosts Morocco and Kenya progressed as two of the four best third-placed teams, each with three points. Morocco face DPR Korea while Kenya take on Japan. Zambia were the sole African casualty, exiting with zero points from Group D.
The four-team knockout presence marks Africa's strongest showing at this level. Nigeria's route looks manageable on paper — Mexico finished third in their group — but the Flamingos must tighten a defence that conceded against Poland and DPR Korea. Ghana carry momentum from their 2-0 win over Canada, while Morocco's nine goals conceded in their last two group matches raise concerns ahead of their DPR Korea rematch.
With quarter-final spots at stake, can Nigeria's youth system deliver a deep run, or will the Round of 16 prove the ceiling for African sides again?
