Flutterwave gets Circle Ventures backing to add USDC settlement across Africa
Flutterwave announced a strategic investment from Circle Ventures, the corporate venture arm of Circle Internet Group, to embed USDC settlement directly into its payment platform. This follows Flutterwave’s 2025 participation in the launch of the Circle Payments Network and aims to let merchants collect payments locally while settling in USDC, cutting delays and costs while enabling near‑instant settlement beyond traditional banking hours.
The move positions stablecoins as critical financial infrastructure for Africa, where global stablecoin circulation now exceeds $300 billion and the continent is one of the fastest‑growing regions for adoption. By operating within a compliance‑first framework, Flutterwave says the USDC integration aligns with existing regulatory requirements and enterprise standards, offering blockchain‑based payments that do not bypass local rules.
Flutterwave is expanding its platform into a multi‑rail system that includes fiat, cards, bank transfers and stablecoins, allowing businesses to pick the fastest, cheapest or most reliable settlement option for each transaction. CEO Olugbenga "GB" Agboola said the backing will power the next era of global money movement from Africa and positions Flutterwave as the default stablecoin gateway for the continent.
With lower fees and faster settlement, will African merchants shift to USDC for cross‑border payments, or continue with familiar bank routes despite the delays?
