Flutterwave Secures Nigerian Banking License, Gains Direct Control
Sponsored content: Flutterwave Inc. secured a Nigerian banking license on April 2, 2026, allowing it to hold customer deposits and manage financial flows directly—a major shift from its previous sponsorship model with local banks. This regulatory approval lets the company internalize key parts of its payment value chain instead of sharing transaction fees with partner institutions.
The license immediately impacts over 1 million SendApp users and 2 million businesses on Flutterwave’s platform. Users gain personal account numbers and instant transfers within the app. Businesses unlock multi-currency accounts, payroll processing, and automated payouts. The company also plans data-driven lending using real transaction history.
Previously, Flutterwave processed over $40 billion across 1 billion transactions via bank partnerships. The new license, following its Mono acquisition, aims to speed up settlements and improve efficiency. CEO Olugbenga Agboola said this enables “streamlined money movement” and faster product development for Nigeria’s multi-trillion naira digital payments market.
This positions Flutterwave to compete more directly with Nigerian banks while offering embedded financial services. With its tenth year approaching, the company targets deeper market penetration.
For users and businesses: Watch for expanded account services and potential fee changes within existing Flutterwave apps. Consider how faster settlements might affect your cash flow. Will traditional banks innovate in response, or will this consolidate Flutterwave’s market power?
