Former DG Enenche says soldiers should earn at least ₦250,000 monthly

Former Director of Defence Information, Major General John Enenche (retd), told Arise Television on Saturday that Nigerian soldiers should not be paid less than ₦250,000 a month. He described the figure as a modest benchmark given the rising cost of living and said soldiers’ sacrifices set them apart from other civil servants. Enenche noted that troops are on duty round‑the‑clock and that even retired officers like himself still get called for duty, citing a recent call where a senior officer asked him to ‘…’ and he complied despite being retired.

The call highlights growing concern over troop morale and retention as inflation erodes real wages. If soldiers feel underpaid, readiness and recruitment could suffer, with broader implications for national security.
