Former Rangers star Ally McCoist says Messi doesn't deserve 2026 Ballon d’Or
Earlier today, former Rangers striker Ally McCoist dismissed Lionel Messi’s 2026 Ballon d’Or nomination on talkSPORT’s Breakfast show, stating “That has angered me. There is no way on this earth. He does not deserve it” despite the eight-time winner’s inclusion. Messi, 39, captained Argentina to the World Cup final (loss to Spain) with eight goals and four assists while sharing the MLS Golden Boot with Inter Miami’s strike partner Petar Musa.
McCoist argues the award must honor the current player of the year, not reputations, preferring Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. “Harry Kane has been absolutely phenomenal,” he said, rejecting notions that Champions League trophies or standout World Cups are prerequisites. He noted Kylian Mbappé’s Real Madrid form and World Cup efforts were impressive but insufficient. The ceremony occurs October 26 in London.
Who do you think merits the 2026 Ballon d’Or more - Messi for his international heroics or Kane for his domestic dominance?
