Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal said on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast that he would rather back President Bola Tinubu than Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027. Speaking on October 6, 2026, Lawal warned that Nigeria could collapse chaotically under Atiku, whereas a collapse under Tinubu might be orderly. He explained that he recently left the ADC after Atiku emerged as its presidential candidate and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Lawal’s stance matters because it reveals a split among northern political figures who once supported Atiku, highlighting concerns about his leadership style and potential instability ahead of the 2027 elections. His criticism stems from personal experience working with Atiku, whom he accused of issuing directives then reversing them after consulting others, creating chaos. This internal opposition could affect Atiku’s ability to consolidate northern support, a crucial bloc in Nigerian politics.

Having previously wanted to work for Atiku to prevent northern decline, Lawal now believes Tinubu offers a more predictable path. Will northern elites and voters prioritize stability over regional allegiance, or will Atiku’s network still sway them despite warnings of disorder?
