Founder's shutdown post leads to Chimoney's CapitalSage acquisition
Chimoney founder Uchi Uchibeke disclosed on X that his Canada-based payments startup signed an acquisition agreement with CapitalSage Vantage Limited just weeks after announcing its May shutdown due to insufficient capital. The deal, still subject to regulatory approval, would make Chimoney CapitalSage's first Canadian payments entity.
Uchibeke stated all investors will be repaid in full and employees compensated from proceeds, with him remaining six months to manage the transition. Crucially, he had kept Chimoney's Money Services Business and Payment Service Provider licenses dormant during wind-down - credentials he says made this acquisition possible by giving CapitalSage instant regulatory access to Canada's payments market without building infrastructure from scratch.
The phased closing accommodates Canada's Retail Payment Activities Act requirements. For CapitalSage, already operating in Nigeria, Kenya, UAE and UK, this provides immediate market entry. Uchibeke will now focus on his separate AI project APort, noting he never planned this outcome when writing the shutdown post he called "the right thing to do."
Will other struggling African startups find similar lifelines through transparent wind-downs, or was this a unique case of founder credibility meeting timely opportunity?
