France is deploying 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide tomorrow, Saturday, October 25 — a 10,000-personnel increase from last weekend — as authorities brace for renewed protests. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the operation Friday, confirming specialized units, helicopters, drones, armored vehicles, and water cannons will be used.

The escalation follows violent demonstrations last Saturday in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and other cities. What began as protests over rising living costs, strained public services, and school conditions deteriorated into widespread looting, vandalism, arson, and clashes with police. In response, several cities have restricted or banned demonstrations entirely. The Louvre in Paris will close tomorrow as a precaution.

Nuñez warned security forces will take a firm stance against violence, business looting, and attacks on public buildings. The expanded deployment comes amid criticism of the government's handling of last weekend's unrest and fears that planned demonstrations could trigger further confrontations.

For Nigerians in France: avoid protest zones, expect transport disruptions and heavy security presence, carry identification at all times, and monitor embassy advisories. The situation reflects how quickly cost-of-living protests can escalate when met with heavy-handed responses.

Will this show of force calm tensions or inflame them further?
