Frank Leboeuf criticises Mbappe's Ballon d'Or claims as annoying and self-centred
Former France international Frank Leboeuf has criticised Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe for repeatedly stating he deserves to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, calling the remarks annoying and proof that his critics are right. Speaking to GOAL, Leboeuf said, "Everything Mbappe does on the field feels like it’s for himself," adding that the striker’s focus on individual glory over team success validates doubts about his mindset. He warned that Mbappe’s public pursuit of the award shows he prioritises personal accolades over collective achievement, noting, "When Mbappe says he wants to win the Ballon d’Or, that says it all. Going into the media to express his wish and to win the Ballon d’Or is annoying because it proves his critics right." The comments come amid Mbappe’s own promise to invest in African football should he win the accolade, a detail noted in related coverage. For Nigerian fans tracking the Ballon d’Or race, Mbappe’s attitude raises questions about whether an individual‑focused winner can truly inspire continental pride, or if his Africa‑linked pledge would outweigh concerns about his self‑centred approach. Will you celebrate a Mbappe victory as a win for African football, or does his insistence on personal glory make you doubt his commitment to the continent’s development?
