French philosopher Morin, 104, dies after life promoting critical thinking
French sociologist and philosopher Edgar Morin has died at age 104, his wife announced Saturday. The WWII Resistance member dedicated his life to promoting critical thinking and combatting intolerance, developing a holistic transdisciplinary approach to understanding humanity's big questions.
Morin was best known internationally for inventing 'cinema verite' with his 1961 documentary 'Chronicle of a Summer' revolutionizing documentary filmmaking through unscripted discussions about class, race and colonialism. He warned of environmental dangers of untrammelled economic growth as early as the 1970s, proving remarkably prescient.
Born to Jewish immigrant parents in 1921, Morin resisted being defined by his background, embracing multiple identities. He remained intellectually active until his final days, using his 220,000 social media followers to comment on issues from climate change to war. His final book was published in 2025, and he continued lamenting 'the absence of awareness that we are marching towards the abyss' while maintaining hope that 'wherein lies the danger also grows the saving power.'
