Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) unveiled a 22-metre robotic arm designed to remove radioactive debris from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, marking a significant step in the decades-long decommissioning project. The snake-like device, weighing 4.6 tonnes, will conduct its third trial debris removal operation at the No. 2 reactor later this year. Dangerously high radiation levels have made full-scale debris extraction the most daunting challenge, with 880 tonnes of hazardous material remaining since the 2011 disaster. The robot's advanced camera system improves information retrieval compared to previous devices, though full extraction operations remain delayed until at least 2037. This technological advancement highlights ongoing international efforts to manage nuclear disasters, though Nigeria's immediate relevance lies in global safety standards and disaster response innovations.
