Gary Neville says Arsenal could win Champions League if they sign Julian Alvarez
Arsenal opened their 2026-27 Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City at Emirates Stadium on Friday night, with goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, while new signing Christos Tzolis impressed on the left flank. Manager Mikel Arteta is seeking to bolster his attacking options before the summer transfer window closes, with Argentine forward Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid identified as a primary target, although Atletico have stated he will not be transferred this summer. Speaking on Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Gary Neville said Arsenal are already well-placed to defend their league title but believes adding Alvarez could make them Champions League contenders. Neville quoted: “What a squad he [Arteta] has assembled here, and if he brings in another forward, I don’t see how anyone can stop them… if Arsenal could somehow secure his services, it would undoubtedly elevate their prospects… And they become not just Premier League title winners; you then think they can go the extra step and win the Champions League as well.” He added that the next ten days are crucial for Arteta to obtain that extra bit of attacking magic, though he remains uncertain about the resources available. For Arsenal supporters, the key question is whether the club can secure Alvarez’s signature and how that would affect their European ambitions.
