Ghana will allow visa-free entry for all African passport holders starting May 25, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed. The announcement came during Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa's state visit and aligns with Africa Day celebrations.

This makes Ghana the fifth African nation with such a policy, joining Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles. The reform eliminates pre-arrival visa requirements entirely. Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said the policy reinforces Ghana's Pan-Africanist heritage while boosting tourism and intra-African trade.

The change coincides with Ghana's new e-visa system launching next month (April 2026), which will streamline procedures while maintaining border security. Since 2025, Ghana has secured 23 visa waiver agreements for its own citizens, expanding their travel access.

For Nigerian travelers, this means no visa needed for Ghana visits after May 25—just a valid passport. The policy supports African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) integration goals. While President Akufo-Addo had pledged similar measures in 2025, they lapsed before implementation; this new policy ensures it happens.

With Africa Day 2026 as the launch date, Ghana positions itself as a leader in Pan-African mobility. Will Nigeria follow suit with reciprocal visa-free access for all Africans, or will maintaining visa requirements limit Nigeria's regional trade and tourism potential?
