Ghana seeks UN recognition of slave trade as gravest crime
Ghana's President John Mahama is pursuing UN recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity. He initiated a resolution for the UN General Assembly in March, building on his September 2025 announcement. Mahama emphasized that reparations must be secured through unity, not given, during a post on X. He reported to the African Union's 39th Assembly about advancing justice and reparations, noting 2025 as the AU Year of Justice through Reparations. The transatlantic slave trade forcibly transported over 12.5 million Africans from the 16th to 19th century. Modern slavery persists, with 50 million people in forced labor or marriage globally, generating $236 billion annually in illegal profits. The ILO reports modern slavery increased by 10 million since 2016.
