Google unveiled Universal Cart at I/O 2026, an AI-powered shopping cart that follows users across Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail. Built on Gemini models and Google Wallet, it tracks prices, finds deals, checks product compatibility and integrates loyalty points via the Universal Commerce Protocol. Launch partners include Nike, Sephora, Target, Walmart and Shopify stores like Fenty. The cart rolls out in the US this summer, with UK, Canada and Australia coming soon; Africa has no announced timeline yet.

For Nigerian online shoppers, Universal Cart could end the frustration of losing deals when jumping between apps, by keeping a single cart that watches for price drops and suggests alternatives. While the feature is not yet available in Africa, Google's existing Shopping Graph and Merchant Centre tools are expanding on the continent, laying groundwork for future rollout.

Keep an eye on Google's official channels for Africa launch dates, and consider using Google Wallet and Shopping tools now to stay ready. When African merchants adopt the open UCP standard, the cart could work locally soon. No immediate action is needed, but staying informed will let you benefit once it arrives.
