He said the governor tasked the committee to review ongoing power sector reforms and outline practical steps toward establishing electricity marketing and ownership in the state. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1524595905268-5'); }); ”The committee is expected to assess power sector reforms, harmonise proposals and develop a clear pathway for achieving steady electricity supply within a reasonable time-frame following up on discussions held at the Power Summit in September 2025 at Four Points by Sheraton, Uyo.” The Commissioner also hinted that experts and technical consultants made presentations, including options on solar and clean energy solutions. Speaking, the Commissioner for Power, Iniobong Robinson, while urging residents to remain patient as the committee works noted that recent reforms allow states to generate, distribute and manage electricity independently. The Chairman of ALGON in the state, Uwemedimo Udo, commended the governor’s initiative, describing poor electricity supply as a common challenge affecting economic growth. He pledged continued collaboration by local governments to support reforms and protect critical infrastructure. On his part, the state’s electricity sector reform consultant, Mr Eyo Ekpo, explained that the 2023 Electricity Act decentralised power generation and distribution, making state-level electricity markets possible. ”Akwa Ibom has a strong potential for sustainable power supply due to its gas resources, power plants, transmission assets, and existing distribution structure currently operated by Port Harcourt Distribution Company, which is expected to transition into a state-controlled entity. Also, electricity is locally achievable when generation, distribution, funding, and bill payment are properly managed.” Don't Miss 2027: Ex-NUJ Deputy National President, Onyike declares to contest for Reps seat You may like SPFL reacts as three reportedly die in Akwa Ibom road crash Barber bags 14 years jail term for defiling minor in Akwa Ibom Akwa Ibom: Youths raise alarm as only skill acquisition centre rots in Ibeno Deforestation, oil spill threaten Akwa Ibom, C’River coastal ecosystem Gang leader shot as troops apprehend suspected diesel thief in Akwa Ibom Akwa Ibom: NMGS seeks sustained engagement of professionals in mining, geosciences
