Guinean opposition figure Sidya Toure dies at 81 in Paris after exile

Sidya Toure, Guinea’s former prime minister and a leading opposition voice, died at age 81 in Paris on Friday after falling ill in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where he had lived in exile since the September 2021 military coup that brought Mamady Doumbouya to power. Toure had headed the Union of Republican Forces (UFR) from abroad; the party was among 40 political groups dissolved in March 2024 in a sweeping crackdown on civil liberties under Doumbouya’s rule. Doumbouya was later elected president in a December 2023 vote that excluded the UFR and Guinea’s two other main opposition parties.

Born in Ivory Coast in 1945, Toure served in that country’s economic and financial administration before moving to Guinea, where Lansana Conte appointed him prime minister in July 1996. He held the post until March 1999, pursuing administrative and economic reforms and strengthening ties with international financial institutions. After leaving government, he led the UFR and ran for president in 2010 and 2015, losing both times.

Current Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah praised Toure as "a prominent figure in Guinea’s political life for three decades" and a pragmatic reformer. His death removes one of the last senior voices openly challenging Doumbouya’s regime, highlighting the continued suppression of dissent in Guinea and raising concerns about democratic backsliding across West Africa.

What does Toure’s legacy mean for Nigeria’s own opposition amid allegations of shrinking political space, and how should West Africans respond to the pattern of coups and banned parties in the region?
