A new study reveals widespread chemical contamination in hair extensions, with 169 hazardous substances detected across 43 products. Both synthetic and natural extensions, including those labeled "human hair" or "plant-based," contain chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption and reproductive harm. Key findings include: 10% of samples exceeding EU safety limits for organotins, phthalates in 50% of products despite "phthalate-free" labels, and 91% containing cancer-linked chemicals under California's Proposition 65. The Silent Spring Institute study highlights exposure risks through skin contact and inhalation during styling. Experts note Black women, who use extensions most frequently, face disproportionate health impacts. Researchers call for stronger regulation, transparent ingredient disclosure, and safety studies. "This industry has long overlooked the health of Black women," said lead author Elissia Franklin. "They shouldn't have to choose between cultural expression and health."
