Ayo Animashaun, founder of The Headies, accused Nigerian artistes of hypocrisy for pursuing Grammy nominations while ignoring local awards, calling it a 'double standard' after stars like Davido and Asake submitted for 2027 Grammys but skip The Headies. He made these comments via Instagram stories Thursday as the 18th Headies—originally slated for October 23, 2026 in Toronto—was rescheduled to April 10-11, 2027.

Animashaun argued international stars like Drake and Boyz II Men skip Grammys without backlash, yet Nigerian artistes face outrage when missing local events. He lamented that Nigerian talent often gains home recognition only after foreign validation, insisting The Headies remains a premier platform deserving local support.

The Toronto postponement stems from complex logistics and cultural challenges unique to Canada, Animashaun told Channels Television. Unlike prior US editions, the Toronto event requires expanded scope and pre-activities in both Nigeria and Canada to connect artists with global labels. He apologized to affected attendees but believes the extra time will create a more impactful African music showcase.

With the new dates set for April 2027, will you prioritize submitting your work to The Headies over foreign awards, or do you believe international validation still holds more weight for Nigerian artistes?
