Health alliance accuses wealthy nations of blocking climate finance at Bonn
The Global Climate and Health Alliance (GCHA) accused developed countries of blocking climate finance negotiations at the 2026 Bonn Climate Change Conference, saying they failed to recall a pledge made at COP30 in Brazil to triple adaptation funding by 2025. The alliance said during the week's talks, wealthy nations appeared unable to honor their commitment to provide grant-based assistance for adaptation, mitigation and loss and damage.
Without sufficient public grant-based finance, developing countries cannot implement national climate plans, leaving populations exposed to worsening health shocks, food insecurity, and climate-related disasters. GCHA warned that there can be no health without finance for adaptation action, and that broader climate goals - including mitigation and loss-and-damage funding - are similarly jeopardized.
The health body also called for strengthening the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and protecting its findings from inappropriate influence, urging more power for the IPCC and greater evidence from vulnerable countries. For Nigeria and other at-risk nations, the impasse may push governments to seek alternative financing or strengthen domestic resilience measures. How might your community adapt if international climate finance remains unreliable?
