The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Drugs and Illicit Trafficking commended NAFDAC for combating drug abuse and regulating medicines nationwide. Committee Chair Timehin Adelegbe visited NAFDAC in Abuja on Monday, stating the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration for effective legislation against illicit drug trafficking and alcohol abuse. Adelegbe noted substance abuse affects all age groups, undermining families, communities, and national security. He pledged legislative support for NAFDAC's greater autonomy to enforce its mandate without interference. NAFDAC DG Mojisola Adeyeye acknowledged the visit and highlighted enforcement challenges, particularly the ban on small alcohol bottles (below 200ml). Adeyeye warned of underage drinking's health and mental implications, citing alarming survey results. While NAFDAC's enforcement draws praise from health advocates, it faces criticism from industry groups over job losses and economic impact. The Federal Ministry of Health confirmed NAFDAC's regulatory authority remains intact.
