House extends 2025 budget capital implementation to Dec 31, 2026
The House of Representatives has extended the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026. This marks the fourth time the National Assembly has postponed the deadline for capital projects in the 2025 budget, citing economic difficulties as the reason for slow implementation.
The bill, sponsored by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, was approved on Tuesday after clause-by-clause consideration in the Committee of Supply. It passed with overwhelming support via voice vote, with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu announcing the result. The House had previously extended the deadline in December 2025, March 2026 (to June 30), and June 2026 (to September 30).
The latest extension gives federal ministries, departments and agencies an additional three months to complete ongoing capital projects captured in the 2025 budget. After approving the bill, the House adjourned plenary until October 13, having resumed after a two-month recess that began July 23. The adjournment may be linked to Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebrations on October 1.
The repeated delays raise concerns about the effectiveness of the annual budget cycle and its impact on infrastructure development and economic growth.
