House extends Nigeria 2025 budget capital deadline to Dec 31 2026
The House of Representatives has extended the deadline for implementing capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30, 2026 to December 31, 2026, following a request from President Bola Tinubu. This marks the fourth extension—the original deadline of December 31, 2025 was first moved to March 31, 2026, then June 30, 2026, and September 30, 2026 before now being pushed to the end of the year.
The extension gives federal ministries, departments and agencies additional three months to spend their capital allocations and complete ongoing infrastructure projects, aiming to prevent abandonment due to funding or implementation challenges. The amendment bill was passed through accelerated readings during plenary.
For contractors, suppliers and citizens waiting on roads, schools, hospitals and other public works, the extra time means projects already underway have a clearer timeline to completion, though it also signals continued delays in budget execution. With the new deadline set, agencies must now finalize procurement, mobilization and execution by December 31, 2026 to avoid lapsing funds.
Will this additional quarter enable ministries to hit their targets and deliver promised infrastructure, or will we see yet another extension as implementation hurdles persist?
