House summons service chiefs, Ribadu over rising insecurity
The House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned service chiefs and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to appear before parliament regarding rising insecurity across the country. The resolution followed adoption of a motion sponsored by Sulaiman Gumi, lawmaker representing Zamfara state's Gummi/Bukkuyum federal constituency.
This action comes as bandits and terrorists continue rampaging nationwide, killing and abducting citizens with increasing frequency. Recent incidents include the Oyo abduction where President Tinubu dispatched Ribadu, IGP, Gbajabiamila, and ministers to affected villages. There have been growing calls for the President to sack the service chiefs to bring in more capable personnel.
The parliamentary intervention signals heightened concern over security performance. With elections approaching and citizens increasingly vulnerable, how should Nigeria balance immediate security needs with long-term structural reforms? Is it time for leadership changes or deeper institutional overhaul?
